These caves were primarily patronized by the Satavahana, Traikutaka, and Silahara dynasties, serving as a vital center for Buddhist learning and pilgrimage for over a millennium.Architectural Style and ValueThe complex comprises 109 caves carved out of basalt rock, showcasing the architectural transition from Hinayana to Mahayana Buddhism. The architectural highlight is Cave 3, a massive Chaityagriha featuring a grand stupa and towering pillars. The site also contains numerous Viharas (monasteries) with rock-cut beds and sophisticated water cisterns, reflecting an advanced ancient engineering system designed to harvest rainwater.Facilities and Visitor NotesBasic facilities such as drinking water, restrooms, and a small canteen are available near the entrance. The best time to visit is between October and March for pleasant weather, or during the monsoon (June to September) to witness the scenic waterfalls. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy walking shoes and carry water for the climb.
