Shiv Khori

HistoryShiv Khori is an ancient cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legend, Lord Shiva hid here while fleeing from the demon Bhasmasura, who was eventually defeated by Lord Vishnu in his Mohini form at the cave's entrance. The cave was rediscovered centuries later by a local shepherd.Deity & SignificanceThe shrine is famous for its natural stalagmite lingam, which is over 4 feet tall. As one of the most revered spiritual places in Jammu and Kashmir, it symbolizes the eternal presence of the divine. It is believed that the cave holds the presence of 33 crore Hindu deities.ArchitectureThis natural wonder is a 200-meter-long cave. The interior features rock formations that naturally resemble Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, and Kartikeya. The cave has a wide entrance but narrows significantly toward the sanctum, requiring devotees to bow in reverence.FacilitiesRansoo, the base camp, offers guest houses, eateries, and locker facilities. The 3.5 km trek to the cave can be covered on foot or by hiring ponies and palanquins. Basic medical aid and drinking water are available along the route.Best Time to VisitThe most auspicious time is during the Maha Shivratri festival in February or March. For pleasant weather, the months from March to June and September to November are ideal for pilgrims.Points to RememberCarry a valid photo ID for registration at the base camp. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the cave. Wear sturdy shoes for the trek and avoid carrying heavy bags during the climb.
