History and SignificancePalitana, located on the Shatrunjaya hills, is considered the most sacred of all jain religious places in Gujarat. It is believed that the first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhdev, delivered his first sermon here. The hills host over 800 temples built over a period of 900 years, making it a peerless site of devotion.Spiritual PrinciplesThe site embodies the core Jain tenets of Ahimsa (non-violence) and asceticism. Devotees climb over 3,500 steps as a form of penance and soul purification. To maintain the sanctity of the hill, no one, including priests, is allowed to stay on the mountain overnight.Architecture and FacilitiesThe temples feature stunning marble carvings and ornate spires that glow in the sunlight. The main Adishwar temple is a masterpiece of architectural detail. Facilities include numerous dharamshalas at the base, doli (palanquin) services for the elderly, and a ropeway for those unable to climb.Visitor Etiquette and TimingThe best time to visit is from October to March to avoid the extreme heat. Visitors must wear modest, clean clothing (preferably white) and strictly avoid carrying leather items. The hills are closed to pilgrims during the monsoon months of Chaturmas. Fasting while climbing is a common practice among devotees.
