About Barah Jyotirlinga (द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंग)

Tirth Yatra across 8 states

The Barah Jyotirlinga (द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंग) represents the twelve most sacred, self-manifested (Swayambhu) radiant representations of Lord Shiva across India. Spread from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the coastal southern tip of the peninsula, this ultimate pilgrimage circuit holds supreme importance in Hinduism. History

According to the Shiva Purana, a divine dispute once arose between Lord Brahma (the Creator) and Lord Vishnu (the Preserver) regarding supremacy. To settle the debate, Lord Shiva pierced the three worlds as an infinite, boundless pillar of light—the Jyotirlinga. Vishnu flew downwards as a boar to find the base, and Brahma flew upwards as a swan to find the top, but both failed. Realizing Shiva’s infinite nature, they bowed to his supremacy. The 12 holy sites are the places where this cosmic pillar of light manifested on Earth to bless humankind.

Travel Information

How to Reach

The temples are spread across India, but most are excellently connected: By Air: Major transit hubs include Indore (for Mahakaleshwar & Omkareshwar), Varanasi (for Kashi Vishwanath), Pune/Mumbai (for Bhimashankar & Trimbakeshwar), and Madurai (for Rameswaram). By Rail: Virtually all sites are near major railheads. Veraval connects to Somnath, Deoghar to Vaidyanath, and Rishikesh/Haridwar serve as gateways for Kedarnath. By Road: Government buses, private taxis, and well-maintained national highways make road travel highly viable for all locations.

Things to Carry

Traditional Attire: Traditional clothing (Dhoti/Kurta for men, Sarees/Salwar suits for women) as many temples strictly enforce dress codes. Comfortable Footwear: Sturdy slip-on walking shoes, as you will be frequently removing them before entering temple premises. Weather-Specific Clothing: Heavy woollens for Kedarnath; light, breathable cotton clothing for southern temples like Rameswaram. Essential IDs & Medical Kits: Government-issued IDs for biometric registration (e.g., Kedarnath or Mahakaleshwar VIP entry) and general altitude/motion sickness medicines.

Travel Tips

Carry warm clothes, basic medicines, and check weather and route advisories before departure.

Important Notes

Online Booking: Pre-book your VIP Darshan, Aarti passes (especially Ujjain’s Bhasma Aarti), and helicopter tickets (for Kedarnath) months in advance. Seasonal Closures: Kedarnath remains closed for six months during winter (typically November to April) due to heavy snowfall. Crowd Management: Expect massive crowds, long queues, and extended waiting times during festivals like Maha Shivratri and the holy month of Shravan.
